Availability:
Are there any openings?
Is there a waiting list? How long?
Hours of operation?
About the dayhome:
Are they a licensed or private dayhome?
How long have they been in business?
How long does the provider intend to be in business?
How many children are currently enrolled and what is the age range?
What is the licensing capacity? (How many children are they legally allowed to have enrolled)
Do they have an Open Door Policy or do parents need to schedule times to drop in and see their child?
Do you go on field trips?
Do you drive with the children?
Where will the children sleep at nap time?
What do the children who dont nap do?
What is the providers daily routine?
How much outside play do the kids get?
What are the rules about children watching TV?
What type of crafts, art, and other activities do you do with the children?
What is the providers discipline policy?
First Aid and CPR certified.
Why has the provider chosen to open a dayhome and provide childcare as their present job?
Will other adults be present in the household during the day?
What type of meals and snacks does the provider serve?
Is there smoking/pets in the home?
What is the dayhomes sick policy?
What are the rules about having someone who isn't a parent pick up my child?
Does the provider have a fire evacuation plan?
What would the provider do in the event of a serious injury or other emergency?
Does the provider carry a cell phone when away from the home with the children?
Is there a back-up provider incase the primary caregiver is ill or away due to appointments or vaction?
Cost:
What are the fees for each age category? (Often infant and toddler care is more expensive)
Does the fee include meals? Snacks?
Is there an extra cost for field trips or other extras?
Is there still a charge when a child is sick? On vacation?
Extra fees such as supply fees? Registration fees? Late fees?
Is subsidy available?
Suggestions to parents from providers:
We recommend holding off asking the fee question. This can turn a provider away as they may feel that your number one concern is the price not the quality of care for your child.
