Availability:

• Are there any openings?

• Is there a waiting list? How long?

• Hours of operation?

About the dayhome:

• Are they a licensed or private dayhome?

• How long have they been in business?

• How long does the provider intend to be in business?

• How many children are currently enrolled and what is the age range?

• What is the licensing capacity? (How many children are they legally allowed to have enrolled)

• Do they have an Open Door Policy or do parents need to schedule times to drop in and see their child?

• Do you go on field trips?

• Do you drive with the children?

• Where will the children sleep at nap time?

• What do the children who don’t nap do?

• What is the provider’s daily routine?

• How much outside play do the kids get?

• What are the rules about children watching TV?

• What type of crafts, art, and other activities do you do with the children?

• What is the provider’s discipline policy?

• First Aid and CPR certified.

• Why has the provider chosen to open a dayhome and provide childcare as their present job?

• Will other adults be present in the household during the day?

• What type of meals and snacks does the provider serve?

• Is there smoking/pets in the home?

• What is the dayhome’s sick policy?

• What are the rules about having someone who isn't a parent pick up my child?

• Does the provider have a fire evacuation plan?

• What would the provider do in the event of a serious injury or other emergency?

• Does the provider carry a cell phone when away from the home with the children?

• Is there a back-up provider incase the primary caregiver is ill or away due to appointments or vaction?

Cost:

• What are the fees for each age category? (Often infant and toddler care is more expensive)

• Does the fee include meals? Snacks?

• Is there an extra cost for field trips or other extras?

• Is there still a charge when a child is sick? On vacation?

• Extra fees such as supply fees? Registration fees? Late fees?

• Is subsidy available?

Suggestions to parents from providers:

• We recommend holding off asking the fee question. This can turn a provider away as they may feel that your number one concern is the price not the quality of care for your child.
